Inside a Pharma GC’s Mind: Power and Privacy
In this episode of "The Counsel's Code," Amit Pandey, EVP & General Counsel at GSK Pharmaceuticals Ltd., explores the legal seat's evolution from "compliance gatekeeper" to "strategic business partner." He discusses why human judgment remains the one skill AI cannot replace and shares a blueprint for integrating modern technology within the high-stakes pharmaceutical industry.
Meet The Speaker: Amit Pandey
We are pleased to feature Amit Pandey, the Executive Vice President & General Counsel at GSK Pharmaceuticals Ltd. With over 20 years of experience, Amit’s career is a masterclass in navigating high-stakes legal environments across the aerospace, healthcare, and pharmaceutical sectors.
Before joining GSK, Amit held pivotal leadership roles at Honeywell Automation and GE Healthcare. He describes the modern legal role as a shift from purely providing "advisory" to "judgment calibration" where a lawyer’s value lies in their ability to influence business strategy through an ethical and legal lens.
Key Insights from the Conversation
What inspired you to pursue a career in law and what drives your vision today?
Amit reflects on the landmark Kesavananda Bharati case as a turning point that revealed how law profoundly influences individual lives and organizational structures. Coming from a family in government service, he saw the rule of law in action early on. Today, he is driven by the power of legal frameworks to protect people and guide businesses toward ethical success.
How has the legal landscape shifted since you started your journey?
Amit describes a transition from a paper-driven, reactive environment to a highly automated, proactive one. Having navigated the 2008 subprime crisis and major industrial de-mergers, he has seen the legal function move from a support role to an enabling one. He notes that the rigor of the corporate world and the evolution of regulatory bodies like NCLT have redefined how legal departments must operate.
How do you manage global compliance and the role of technology in the pharma sector?
In the pharmaceutical industry, compliance has moved from manual documentation to event-based, automated systems with real-time dashboards for boards. Amit emphasizes following the "spirit of the law" rather than just the letter. While he acts in an advisory capacity, technology now ensures that every global requirement has an escalation mechanism to maintain high standards of transparency.
How has the role of the General Counsel evolved into a strategic partnership?
The role has shifted from a legal advisor to a "trusted business partner" focused on management and judgment. Amit explains that the primary question from the business has changed from "Can it be done?" to "How can it be done?" This shift requires GCs to be enablers of growth rather than gatekeepers, ensuring legal goals are seamlessly aligned with business objectives.
What is the "AI Reality" for the legal sector and where is human judgment non-negotiable?
Amit views Generative AI as a "watershed moment" that will redefine the next decade. While AI is irreplaceable for automating mundane tasks like initial contract drafting, human judgment remains essential for "judgment calibration"—the ability to forecast and mitigate risk based on experience. He believes the future belongs to lawyers who learn to use AI as a high-powered assistant.
How do you future-proof legal teams to align with evolving technology?
The key is a culture of "learning, unlearning, and relearning." Amit advocates for teams to adopt internal AI platforms to protect data while significantly reducing turnaround times. He believes that quality will now drive quantity, and lawyers must invest their time in validating AI outputs to ensure they comply with local laws and organizational ethics.
Rapid Fire Round
Essential Value: Integrity. There is no substitute for transparently advising stakeholders in a rightful, legal manner.
One Skill Not Taught in Law School: Judgment Calibration. The ability to understand business context and take decisive action is only gained through experience.
Biggest Myth: That in-house lawyers are "blockers." In reality, they are enablers and the best strategic partners a business can have.
Work-Life Balance Hack: The 90/10 Principle. Focus on the 90% within your control while at work, and do not let the uncontrollable 10% follow you home.
Success Mantra: Focus on making others successful. Whether it is your organization or your colleagues, being an enabler is the key to personal success.
